Messi Admits He Cried During Argentina’s World Cup Opener, Here Is Why

During the post match interview, he said, “Yes I cried, after the first goal, but it was not related to anything related to the football pitch"

Argentina football superstar Lionel Messi netted his first ever FIFA World Cup hat-trick in the defending champions’ opener game against Algeria, fans all over the world cheering for him. In what could be his last world cup, he has already matched the all-time world cup goal record of Miroslav Klose. But Messi was seen tearing up like a little kid after he scored his first in the game.

During the post match interview, he revealed the reason for him tearing up, and said, “Yes I cried, after the first goal, but it was not related to anything related to the football pitch.”

Messi went on to say, “I have been going through some difficult days, and I am grateful that I have my teammates and the Argentina delegation by my side, giving me a lot of strength.”

During the run-in to the FIFA World Cup 2026, Messi has been going through a rough patch including a hamstring injury and uncertainties around him regaining fitness before the tournament. This would be his last dance in Argentina colours, which made it necessary for him to get back into shape.

The football legend nevertheless overcame his injury and marked his presence with a hat-trick, and is now leading the goal scoring chart of this tournament and at the joint-top of all-time charts. He is set to face Austria on Monday, June 22 in their next game. If he is able to score in that game, he could leave behind the German legend Klose and could become the numero uno goalscorer in the FIFA World Cup history.

Reacting to the event of Messi tearing up after the goal, football icon Zlatan Ibrahimovic said “People are surprised when they see Messi in tears, but I’m not. That’s what happens when football is part of your soul.”

“The tears were not about one goal. They were about sacrifice, expectation, and years of fighting for that badge,” he added.
