Aam Aadmi Party to form govt in Delhi with Congress

AAP is all set to stake claim to form the govt in Delhi next week with the support of Congress.

New Delhi: After initially refusing to take support from any of the two major parties, the nascent Aam Aadmi Party, which made a stunning political debut, winning 28 of 70 Assembly seats, is all set to stake claim to form the government in Delhi next week with the support of eight Congress legislators.

The office of lieutenant-governor Najeeb Jung has said, however, that AAP chief Arvind Kejriwal is yet to seek any formal appointment.

“He can seek an appointment on Monday itself. This is no big issue,“ a senior official said.

This is the first time in Delhi's history that the second-largest party will stake claim to form the government. In 1993, the BJP -led by veteran Madan Lal Khurana -won an absolute majority. The next three polls were won by the Congress' Sheila Dikshit.

The Aam Aadmi Party has reportedly got over one million SMSes in response to its plea for public feedback a few days ago, and a majority of these want it to form the government, it said.

Sources close to Mr Kejriwal said a majority of AAP legislators also want the party to form the government. “The MLAs had given their feedback on the basis of the response they received from their respective constituencies,” a source said.

While the AAP was gearing up to form the new government, newly appointed Delhi Pradesh Congress Committee president, Arvinder Singh Lovely, said his party had given only conditional support to the AAP manifesto. “We have not given any support to the AAP.

We basically want to expose them for making so many unrealistic promises. We are supporting their manifesto so that they can implement all the promises.” After Lovely’s comments, AAP leader Kumar Vishwas said this showed the double standards of the Congress. “The Congress is a double faced snake,“ he reportedly said on the social media.
