‘My family calls me Captain Caution’, says Aamir Khan
Basking in the success of his recent release Dhoom 3, Bollywood box-office king Aamir Khan seems thrilled to bits. “I’m relieved and thrilled by the stupendous success of Dhoom 3. For a successful film, the yard stick is that if the weekend collections are multiplied by two, then the film is said to have done okay. If further multiplied by three, it’s good and when multiplied by four, then the film is said to have done very well. But rarely have the weekend results multiplied by five — that can be called excellent,” he says.
“D3 was released with the most number of prints and has been watched by worldwide audiences. The more people watch the film, the greater satisfaction it brings to the makers. I select films based on my instincts, so if I like a script, I jump at the opportunity to do it. I remember, Kiran didn’t like Rang De Basanti too much but she liked the script of Dhoom 3,” he adds.
The actor shares his take on the much-talked about crux of the story in D3, saying, “It’s a very emotional story, which showcases the love between two brothers. I actually shed tears while hearing the first narration. The most intriguing part of the tale was the love between the two brothers. Sahir is ready to give up his respect i.e. his hat, while he requests Jai to set his brother Samar free. For me, the biggest pull was the exchange of emotions between the two brothers so I instantly said yes to the double role.”
Touching upon his relationship with his own brother Faizal Khan, Aamir says, “Faizal has always been giving, it’s me who hasn’t been so generous. In fact, Faizal and I read the script of D3 together. He always sits with me and helps me make decisions while choosing scripts. My biggest fear is whether I will be able to give my 100% to whatever I do, and Faizal has always stood by me.”
Can we expect to see Faizal back on the big screen? “Not now. But yes, he currently looks after my work,” Aamir replies.
How close is he to the characters that he portrayed in the film? “I’m a combination of both Sahir and Samar. I am an emotional guy and I fear losing the love of my near and dear ones. I constantly worry about my insecurities in life. If someone says that I’ve not done a particular job to the best of my abilities, I go back and reassess my drawbacks,” says the star who is known to be a perfectionist.
Aamir then smiles and adds, “Because I’m constantly worrying about my insecurities, my family has given me the title of ‘Captain Caution’. They’ve designed a special cape with different inscriptions and symbols and presented it to me.”
Is he ever worried about losing his stardom? “No, I don’t. But I only understand the performing arts, so I can’t think of any other career even in the future,” he admits.
We prodded the actor about his relationship with ex-wife Reena Dutta. “Yes, I do share an important bond with her. She is extremely close to us and is still very much family. We still love and regard each other. We share a different equation altogether. We may be legally divorced but a piece of paper cannot change our relationship, which has moved to another level,” he points out.
