Mylapore fest to open on January 9
Chennai: Mylapore is all geared up to host its traditional ‘Thiruvizha’ this month with all its popular kutcheris, art works and ‘kolam’ competitions. The three-day festival will commence on January 9.
“The festival will see people from all walks of life. No one is debarred as there is no entry ticket for the carnival,” said T.T. SrinivasaraÂghaÂvan, managing director of Sundaram Finance, which is organising the fest.
“Our motive is to create a ‘Grama Thiruvizha’ amid this congested city and showcase the flavour of Madras to everyone,” he added.
The festival will include cyclerickshaw tours, walks across food zones, thematic dances inside Sri Kapali temple, vintage film music concerts, celebrating a few late maestros and mikeless group concerts in parks.
“Every morning, during the festival, a group of children will be singing without mikes in the parks,” said Vincent D’Souza, director of the Mylapore festival. “By eveÂning a group of cycle rickshaws, which are a rare site nowadays, will take the people on a pleasant tour around MylaÂpore for a fee of '50,” he added.
The celebrations will also promote environmental conservation through use of cloth bags. “Anyone who comes with a plastic bag will be asked to exchange with one of our cloth bags,” said D’Souza.
“There are no celebrities addressing these events; the children and public will be the celebrities who will make the fest colourful by showcasing their talents,” said Srinivasaraghavan.
