University students turn to ‘contract cheating’

HYDERABAD: The practice of contract cheating, which involves hiring a third party to complete student assignments, has become more prevalent in recent years. Students are increasingly using various apps to complete their assignments, including dissertations, of course for a price.

Because there is no law in the country to prevent contract cheating, some Masters and PhD students are accused of using these apps to complete their assignments. However, if caught, such students may face disciplinary action from their professors and colleges.

These apps and websites provide services such as writing essays, research papers, critical writing, case studies, course work, movie reviews, online tests, quizzes, speeches, and even a full thesis. They charge a set fee for each assignment. The fee charged by the apps and website is determined by the student's urgency.

'Get the desired grade in 3 easy steps,' says one website. Above-average CGPA, on-time delivery, high quality, and complete confidentiality are all "guaranteed”, it proclaims. The majority of the work is done via email, and phone calls are avoided.

Deccan Chronicle spoke to some of the students who have used these apps, and hired people to do their assignments. While some began while still in school, others used it throughout their graduation and after graduation without being caught. These services are being used by students at well-known colleges, universities, and schools. A student claimed that his own tuition teacher does his homework for extra money without his parents' knowledge.

A chartered accountant student has been hiring people to help him with his homework. His friends have also followed in his footsteps. "The concept is novel, and the handwriting is neat as well." Sometimes we don't even read the assignment or understand what it's about; but we're happy because we got a good grade," he explained.

Another university student stated that his institution is extremely strict about plagiarism. But he has never been caught in the last two-and-a-half years because the organisation he has hired offers new ideas and charges close to Rs 4,000 for a lengthy assignment.

Professors and lecturers in the city stated that they do not have the time to check each assignment for plagiarism online. Of course, if caught during the viva and Q&A, students will be exposed. "We have seen a few cases where students have been caught, are not allowed to sit for placements, and their grades have been reduced. Such students will be unable to advance in life and will be fired from their jobs due to a lack of knowledge," they stated.
