Aiswarya Dinakar Patil tried her hand in ‘pencil miniature’ for the first time in 2015. She was looking for a birthday gift for her friend and it was her best friend Amrita who suggested that she try something different. And that was the beginning.
Aiswarya, born in Maharashtra and now settled in Palakkad, is a fourth-year student of architecture at K.M.C.T College of Architecture, Kozhikode. She is currently doing her internship programme with Prakriti Architecture, Kozhikode.
The self-taught artist took almost three months to complete her first work. As it was a success, she started to spend more time carving miniature sculptures out of graphite in pencils. In the beginning, she used normal blades for carving. It was a tedious task and took a lot of time. After a few months, she attended a workshop at T.K.M. College of Architecture, Kollam.
“My family gives me all support, but they are concerned over my health. Once I start working on a sculpture, I don’t rest without completing it,” says Aiswarya. She has completed almost 50-60 works till now. She conducts many workshops on the art as well. In the workshop that was held in Kochi recently, she taught children the basics of pencil miniature. Her next workshop is in Ooty.
Aiswarya became famous after she received the Vajra World Record in May 2018. After that, she started getting more works. She now takes orders online. Currently, she is trying to conduct an exhibition by April last.
“I mostly do pencil miniature when I come to Palakkad during weekends. I can even spend the whole day doing it,” says Aiswarya. She didn’t get a chance to present this art in her college because she is doing internship.
After completing the course, she plans to pursue higher studies in architecture along with her pencil miniature works.
