Colours of innocence

Crescent-2, an ongoing exhibition at Durbar Hall Art Gallery, Kochi, features art works of talented children mentored by artist Sujith Surendran.

It’s overwhelming times for the students of Crayons Art. Though it’s their fifth art exhibition, their art works adorning the wall of the prestigious Durbar Hall Art Gallery is a dream-like experience for their tutor, artist Sujith Surendran.

“For these amateur little artists, this is a humbling opportunity,” says Sujith, who teaches art in a different style, unlike his contemporaries. Sujith believes in taking the children outdoor where they can observe the environment and paint whatever intrigues them.

The exhibition, Crescent-2, that will end on Sunday, features paintings in acrylic made by students of different age groups, the youngest ones at eight years. Asked why he set such a stage to display the works of his students, Sujith says, “I have always believed that children can only go forward and succeed only if we support them and acknowledge their work. I never miss a chance to endorse them because I believe in their talent and hard work. I say this confidently because the ease at which the young students grasp the method to use acrylic paint on a canvas was astounding. They were more than happy to learn a new technique and try their hands in it.”

There’s no particular theme for Crescent-2, which is a platform for the students to share their thoughts and sights they come across. The kaleidoscope of colours covers topics like rural greenery and traditional art forms. Sujith observes that children these days are smart and have no inhibition in airing their opinions and thoughts on a canvas using acrylic while others of their age colour with crayons and sketch on books.

The positive reactions to the exhibition, Sujith says, for children don’t mean much, “For them, ignorance is bliss. None of them would have actually understood the gravity of the opportunity, which is one of the reasons why they could deliver their best,” he opines.
