Designed for delight
Dopamine décor is trending! Pinterest and Instagram are bursting with examples of this style of interior aesthetics, where lively shades, daring patterns, prints and textures that draw attention, and an individualistic ambience hold sway.
For those not familiar with the term, dopamine is a neurotransmitter that operates as the brain’s euphoria conductor, orchestrating waves of joy. By extension, dopamine décor evokes jubilation, and is an expression, in terms of colour, materials and spatial arrangement, of what makes one elated. Put another way, it revolves around enveloping oneself with furnishings, artworks and trinkets that awaken delight.
Here’s a tip to buy into the trend – figure out what kindles euphoria in you in the morning. Will a favourite colour that stands out from the monochromatic décor of your living room brighten your day? Or will a whimsical vintage kitchen accessory bring a smile to your face?
In practical terms, the aim of dopamine décor is to infuse dynamic bursts of vibrancy into standard pieces of furniture, like the console table, the credenza and even the ubiquitous corner table. For example, unusual upholstery or fanciful cushions can liven up a staid sofa, and add a playful counterpoint to soft pastel walls.
This style of interior decoration has another facet too – it calls for a heightened appreciation of sustainably acquired accessories.
Here are some insights into the reigning favourite that interior designers shared:
Charming colour pops
In the era of subdued and neutral home interiors, dopamine decor is a refreshing alternative. It represents an intriguing trend that has no strict guidelines and instead ignites feelings of delight, infusing spaces with liveliness. It allows for the expression of the homeowner’s unique individuality and character, evident for all to see.
The core of this approach lies not in overwhelming the space with numerous colours, but in skilfully experimenting with fabrics, patterns and textures to maintain a harmonious colour palette. The use of varying shades of a single colour, coupled with a well-chosen accent, becomes the key to achieving its charm.
In one of my projects, the design of this fairly muted family home with pops of colour and greens was carefully devised while taking into account the client’s spatial requirements and financial limitations. The decision to adopt dopamine decor as the concept for this residence was guided by both the client’s personal preferences and the financial parameters they provided. What adds an intriguing dimension to this concept is its adaptability to varying budget ranges; it’s not dependent on a substantial budget and can be executed even with modest resources.”
Emotion enhancing spaces
Dopamine décor enhances and elevates both ambiance and mood. According to me it is a way of introducing elements in your daily life that can spark joy and happiness and create an environment that inspires positivity and well-being. This approach enhances interior design to uplift our mood by merging design, science, comfort and emotion. Using textures and colour psychology in the material palette can enhance a person’s mood.
We also incorporate Biophilia in our designs which is known to have an emotional connect with nature and natural elements.
Biophilic design can reduce stress levels, improve mood, and increase cognitive performance. Adding a slice of nature is the best way to create a sanctuary that gives a sense of calmness and tranquillity.
This décor trend is different from the rest as it facilitates a way of life and transcends conventional design, where spaces are customized and tailormade to enhance emotion.”
Designing happiness
The idea behind dopamine decor should be to intentionally create environments/spaces that trigger positive emotional responses, contributing to feelings of pleasure, satisfaction, and well-being for the occupants.
Whether it’s through carefully selected bright colour schemes, incorporating art elements, bold pattern mixes, or thoughtful arrangements of travel trophies/books, creating quiet corners and green spaces, the goal is to create an environment which is emotionally uplifting that resonates with the homeowners on a personal level. Designers should aim to create spaces that go beyond aesthetics and truly connect with the emotions, interests and memories of those who live/ use the space.”
