Dasara elephants enter Mysuru palace

BENGALURU: The Dasara elephants received a ceremonial reception as they entered the Mysuru Palace on Tuesday. The jumbos from various elephant camps of the State reached Mysuru on September 1 and were camping at Aranya Bhavan. The jumbos marched from Aranya Bhavan and passed through Ashoka Puram Ramaswamy Circle, Chamaraja Double, Gun House and reached the Palace. They will participate in the 10-day Dasara festivities to be held in October.

The tamed elephants-Abhimanyu, Vijaya, Varalakshmi, Dhananjaya, Mahendra, Bheema, Gopi and Kunjan were given a ceremonial reception at the palace. A host of dignitaries were present to welcome the pachydems including District in-charge Minister Dr H.C. Mahadevappa and Mayor Shivakumar. The minister showered flowers on the elephants and stated that temporary sheds have been set-up for the elephants and their caretakers inside the Palace premises.

The jumbos will begin rehearsal for the umbo savari (elephant procession) which will be held on October 25 as part of Dasara festivities.

The jumbo savari is the procession of elephants on the last day of the Dasara celebrations and the procession of jumbos starts from the palace premises to Bannimantap covering a distance of about 6 km.

The Mysuru Dasara festivities will be inaugurated on October 15 at Chamundi Hill by noted lyricist Hamsalekha.
