White Xmas tree sales shoot high
For many, the best part of the Christmas celebrations is to decorate the Xmas tree at home and make a wish while hanging the baubles, toys, and candy canes on it. Traditionally, one would opt for a green Christmas tree with cherry and pine for the extra touch to decorate the house. However, white, and pink Christmas trees are the most sought-after trees this year. A 2021 study revealed that white trees are the most popular Christmas decoration ideas of the year – following a combined total of 2,566,517 appearances across Pinterest, Instagram, and TikTok.
Dr. Nisha Johnny, creative head of Advent Christmas store says, “White Christmas trees have been trending for a long time. It died down a couple of years ago but is cropping up again now, particularly after the influence of social media like Instagram, tik tok, Pinterest.” The pink tree trend hasn’t picked up much in India. Only a certain section of people, especially kids who love the colour pink are interested. Dr Nisha says that the movie Barbie piqued every kid’s interest in pink. She further adds, “The demand for flocked white Christmas is increasing. It's quite realistic as the tree is seen covered in snow during Christmas.”
Versatility
This emerging trend of delightful departure from green to pink or white Christmas trees has not only added a contemporary flair to the festive season but has also become a symbol of evolving tastes and a celebration of diversity in holiday decor. The monotonic Christmas trees are generating curiosity and an idea of something unique amongst the buyers.
For the longest time, vibrant green trees have dominated Christmas celebrations in India. However, the rise of white and pink Christmas trees marks a departure from convention, introducing a whimsical and modern aesthetic to the holiday season. Janice Mascarenhas (40), a Mumbai resident and manager to Chief Operating Officer at Travel Food Services says, “We alternate between white and green Christmas trees every year. So, last year we decorated a white Christmas tree that was gifted to us years ago. Although we prefer green over white, sometimes we think of doing something different hence, we go with the white tree. We reuse the old decorative ornaments for both the trees.”
The Cost Factor
The usual price of premium quality 6-7 feet tall flocked Christmas trees is around Rs 10,000- 20,000. The 4-6 feet PVC white Christmas tree costs around Rs 3,000-7,000. Anwar Hussain, a local vendor from Mumbai, who has been selling Christmas trees for 25 years says, “The 2-feet tree costs around Rs 2,000, 5-feet for Rs 2,700 and the 6-feet tall white Xmas tree costs Rs 3,500. The price for a 6-feet pine with cherry, snow Christmas tree is Rs 5,600. It is imported from Taiwan. This tree is currently in high demand more than the complete white Christmas tree.”
Social Media Influence
Social media platforms have played a significant role in popularising this trend. Several influencers and trendsetters have shared photos and videos of their beautifully adorned white and pink Christmas trees. The hashtag #WhitendPinkChristmas has become a gargantuan success. It is a virtual gallery showcasing the creativity and diversity of festive decorations, with the hashtag #PinkChristmastree gaining over 33.5 million views on TikTok. Moreover, the trend aligns well with the contemporary home decor aesthetic, where minimalism, pastels, and unconventional design choices have gained popularity. White and pink Christmas trees seamlessly integrate into modern interiors, serving as stylish focal points during the festive season.
Season of Pastels
The years 2022 and 2023 have been the seasons of pastels in India. While celebrities adorned pastel shades in their wedding lehengas and set-ups, people have surely picked up the trend for festive occasions as well. The trend's popularity can be attributed to its versatility. White, iced blue, pink, and white frosted trees provide a neutral canvas for various decorating themes, allowing individuals to express their creativity in unique ways and experiment with it. From classic red and gold accents to more contemporary themes featuring pastels and metallics, these trees offer a customizable backdrop for diverse cultural and coloured-themed celebrations. This trend reflects not only a shift in decorating preferences but also a celebration of diversity, creativity, and the joy of embracing new traditions during the most wonderful time of the year.
