Shrug' it off

In candy colours, quirky prints and interesting fabrics, this trend is making a comeback.

Easy breezy summer shrugs can add style to a mundane day. Call them shrugs, boleros or capes, they’re ruling the style charts. It’s a look that’s runway approved. In bright hues and quirky prints, summer shrugs are bringing in a new wave of styling as they add an extra dimension to any outfit. Here’s how you can wear them the right way and see heads turn.

Flaunt your style in peekaboo chiffons, cool cottons, delicate lace and net throws. Fast fashion is the new mantra feels designer Anjali Sharma, French Curve. “Shrugs are in vogue these days; in fact a whole variation of the shrug family is in. When in light weight fabrics, they add a fresh visual element to an ensemble and a super layer to add on for an evening out.”

Keep your feminine charm intact while adding a spunky edge with these summer shrugs. Designer Reshma Kunhi adds, “Long summer shrugs in light weight fabric like printed georgettes or in solid hues are trending this season. Wear denim jeans with a crop top and pair it with a georgette or light knit floor length shrug. If you’re going formal, try an off-shoulder long gown or a sleeveless one with a short shrug. Even a medium length shrug that ends at your knees looks gorgeous in summers with shorts and a sleeveless shirt.”

Those heading for a beach vacation can just pack some see-through full length shrugs to wear over your swim wear as these are set to take centre stage this season. Shalini Chopra, fashion blogger, Stylish by Nature swears by knitted and crochet versions to add pretty layers to a boring outfit and states, “A mini denim version with scooped hemline accents tanned legs, while a looser design cinched at the waist with a thin belt is great for a fuller figure. A plaid knee-length shrug is delightfully feminine and goes well with converse sneakers.

Pretty pinstripes can be worn with nude sandals to capture the spirit of summer, while a rainbow-shaded cummerbund makes a colourful splash on a pure white base with tiny pin-tucks. You can pair these summer shrugs with shorts or thin pair of distressed skin tight denims. A shrug with frilled hem in pale pink looks chic over jeans. For nights, a great look is to wear them over a plain white singlet, jeans and some boho beads.”
