Making the cut!
Stop for a minute and think of it: Designer wear is often pegged as an option for the niche; with ensembles coming in with price tags that quite do the opposite of padding your wallet. But Nagashree Shreyas, a copy writer-turned-couture wear designer, doesn't buy into the hype. And her recent venture, The Pixie Yard Couture Studio testifies the same — as she single handedly custom-makes gowns for women and kids as little as four! The zesty youngster tells us more about how creating couture is the way forward...
Having donned the designer’s hat just early this year, Nagashree shares a rather interesting episode which egged her to start out on her own. “During my wedding, I fell in love with designs that I couldn’t afford. The designs were appealing, but not the price! So, I hatched a plan to do something that fits for all, to ensure the price was affordable, trendy and comfortable at the same time.
This is because I make it a point to make do with less using materials that can be re-used:unused/old silk sarees and convert them into gowns, lehengas and even blazers. To avoid wastage, the remains of old fabrics are used to create nifty tops and garments!” Also, a large part of my creations entail the use of eco-friendly fabrics like khadi and jute. I'm inspired by nature and colours - so if you observe, most of my works are a riot of bright hues and standout cutouts that accentuate a woman’s femininity. But there’s an unmissable element of fun — something, which even my four-year old clients acknowledge.” Priced within the range of '6,000 to 8,000; Nagashree’s label is tailor made for the modern girl!
Quite like most entrepreneurs, the 27-year-old tells us how the journey was fraught with challenges. “I guess my love for trendy, quirky and edgy silhouettes helped me wage the odds. I don’t go by a rule book. I go by my intuition. I detest convention. The only advice I would like to give is, don’t give up, no matter what! Sustenance is the key. And that’s one thing, which keeps me going. You can choose the designs, feed the measurements and get it delivered at your doorstep.”
