Dressed to the TEE'!
First Selena Gomez set fashion watchers’ hearts aflutter with her ‘Pajama’ look, then came the normcore trend, which saw celebrities making headlines for their basic ‘de-glam’ and unpretentious outfits, and how can one forget the athleisure (workout clothes doubling up as casual wear) craze?! With all these different trends co-existing side by side at the moment, pointing to a common factor – comfort, the latest one that’s taking street style and maybe even red carpet fashion by storm is the ‘t-shirt as dress’ look. You know those comfortable, oversized, slouchy t-shirts that you wear to sleep? You can actually wear them to the mall or to the corner grocery store now (minus trousers), thanks to celebrities from Rihanna to Kendall Jenner.
Of course it was supermodel and reality star Jenner who was among the first to embrace the trend with a full-sleeved army green sweat shirt, teamed with black stilettos, no less. While the minimal look was worn for a casual outing, Jenner turned things up a notch when she attended an event in an oversized Givenchy tee with their signature bulldog print. The black t-shirt was teamed with calf length Christian Dior boots, a black choker and small handbag. Understated and chic, she kept her makeup and hair also very basic, which made the whole look come together perfectly.
“I think it’s nice that people are embracing the look. I think it’s comfortable, covers all your flaws and is great for when you want to beat the heat,” says designer Priyanka Ella Lorena.
Singer Rihanna too has opted for the ‘no-pants’ look on multiple occasions, first with a pale white and blue number and later with a more bolder piece bearing kitschy prints of teddy bears and sports shoes. The first look was worn with gold accessories and nude pumps, while the latter was finished off with leopard print sneakers and a loud violet baseball cap.
“I personally love the look. But it’s an unusual silhouette so it’s best to give a lot of thought to accessorising. You can wear a belt to give it some shape or wear it with a long shrug and strappy sandals,” explains Karishma Singh, a city-based designer.
Apart from these two stunning ladies, stars like Gomez, Hailey Baldwin, Gigi Hadid and Rita Ora have also gotten in on the trend, showing off their insanely toned legs. With summer well within our reach, there’s no time like now to go pantless yourself.
