Take the plunge: Expert tips on how to carry off plunging necklines with panache
Plunging necklines have always made for a stunning fashion statement. Priyanka Chopra for example stole the show during her dinner with US President Barack Obama and his wife Michelle. Dressed in a black Zuhair Murad gown, with an unending neckline, Priyanka totally rocked the look.
But these necklines are quite tricky. Most often than not, you’re dealing with cleavage issues and lingerie that peeks through. Here’s what you need to remember if you plan to wear a dress with a plunging neckline.
“Dresses with plunging necklines are very glamorous and should be worn for an evening party or for an event. They make for a very sexy statement. Also remember, you have to keep your audience in mind before wearing a plunging neckline” explains Nitasha Gaurav, stylist to some of the biggest stars in B’town.
Like every other dress, the ground rule here to is to wear the right kind of lingerie. “You can’t wear lingerie that sneaks up from under your dress. Keep in mind that buying good quality lingerie will make things easier as they won’t peek. These days you can easily find a bra for plunging necklines that keeps the breast in place,” she adds.
For women who are small or medium busted, a plunging neckline is easier to handle, but for those who are on the heavier side, it can be troublesome.
“If you don’t find a bra that is easily hidden then one can go in for nipple tape.
This is an easy trick to avoid accidents and many celebrities use this,” explains celebrity stylist Indrakshi Ria Pattanaik. She adds that one can also opt for stick-ons with a deep-u.
Nitasha further adds, “People can also opt for tape to keep the dress in place. Remember, before anything, it is important to have a dress with a good fabric,” says Nitasha. If you don’t want all the attention at the neckline, you can also wear a neckpiece that will divert the attention.
Both stylists, however, stand by one rule. “The make-up has to be right. You can’t have your neck and face looking different. They need to be of the same colour, so make sure that happens,” they explain. You can also use a bronzer to highlight the cleavage.
The last thing ladies, before you step out to dazzle people in that dress, is confidence Indrakshi says, “You need to be very confident if you’re going to wear a plunging neckline. “You can’t keep tugging at it and looking uncomfortable. It is the confidence in wearing it that adds to the sexy look.”
