6 monsoon running tips
Monsoons can amp up your run and completely change the vibe of the whole experience. It is often hard to take the first step in the less-than-perfect weather conditions, however, if you take the necessary precautions and are careful, running in the monsoons can be quite exhilarating. However, it is important to be extra careful about what you wear and how you gear-up for rain run. Rajat Khurana - Managing Director at ASICS India, an avid runner himself shares few tips with you before you lace up for the rains.
Stick to an indoor warm-up session – As getting wet in the monsoons is inevitable, switch to indoor pre- and post-run workouts, whether it involves stretches, yoga or jogging. This ensures that you’re ready and raring to go the moment you step outside, preventing any second thoughts or cold shocks once you’re out in the rain. Indoor warm-ups also help the body retain the warmth for longer opposed to outdoor warm-ups.
Neon up – This monsoon, flaunt your fluorescent shorts and cropped sweatpants, as it is important that you maintain visibility while running at dawn and dusk hours are very overcast during the rains.
Stay hydrated - Running in the rains may not always make you feel thirsty; however, the effort of the run usually increases your perspiration and gets you dehydrated faster. Therefore, remember to keep the water bottle handy and keep replenishing your supply continuously.
Electronics check – We all know that rains and Smartphone don't go so well together. Protecting your Smartphone, players and other gizmos, can be extremely crucial while running in this season. Therefore, opt for running clothes with inside pockets and waterproof linings.
Socks – Cotton socks are a big no-no when it comes to running. If you’re a regular runner, it may be wise to invest in socks that keep the wet out of your shoes. No matter how nimble footed one may claim to be, stepping on a puddle or a wet patch is unavoidable, and your socks are likely to get soggy, which could also result in blisters.
Shoe care – This is one of the most important things to take care of. Always remember to take out the insoles from your shoes and loosely stuff them with newspaper. This will help you keep the shape of your shoe intact and draw out moisture. Depending on how wet the shoes are, you may need to replace the paper after a few hours. Additionally, to avoid wearing out your favourite pair, it’s best to rotate through your old practice shoes during the rainy season.
So, go enjoy your monsoon run and don’t let these monsoons rain on your parade!
