Fit and flare: How to sashay down the carpet
Hallelujah ladies! Flowy and flared silhouettes are back, and are certainly leading the pack — a bevy of a-lister stars like Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Sonam Kapoor, Kirsten Dunst and Elle Fanning were spotted sashaying down in flared hip gowns at Cannes. But while they nailed the look and probably made you wither with envy, here’s an easy yet doable edit to sport the trend with absolute élan!
“While dresses have quite made it as daily wear into the metropolitan woman’s wardrobe, there’s still a clear demarcation on the basis of a lot of factors. For instance, flared hip gowns are quite having a major moment in the fashion scene now. But, it’s also important to know that the very silhouette of the dress screams party. So restrict it to cocktail parties or evening soirees,” advices Abhilekha Shetty, city-based fashion designer.
Frame facts: While a large number of women are gushing over flared hip dresses, stylist and fashion curator Tasneem Bohra opines that the silhouette is best suited for the lissome.
“Flared hip dresses were essentially designed for women who are lean and tall. So it’s the best bet for women with slender or athletic frames. But again, with so many fabrics and textures, it all depends on how well one is able to carry it.”
She also adds, “If you notice, the trick to acing the look lies in picking the right fabrics and layers for your frame. For instance, hour glass women are best suited for hip flared gowns. However, pear shaped women can also give the trend a try, provided they settle for very minimal or absolutely no layers at all. The heavier you are, the lesser must be the layering. For petite women, the point to note is that the waistline of the dress should be low. Dresses with dropped waistlines are the best bet for women with a tiny posture.”
Quite like most feminine outfits, accessorising also plays an important part in enhancing the overall look of an ensemble. Speaking about the same, Abhilekha suggests, “Flared hip gowns leave you with myriad options to do your hair and make-up. But I personally feel a dramatic eye-makeup and nude lips works best for this. Try embellished eyelids, or even bubbled winged eyeliner if you dare! A box clutch and a pair of pointy pumps are the best possible accouterments for extra brownie points!
