Onam takes the cake!
Busybees are present in almost every city. Last-minute plans for holidays won’t leave them with much time to indulge in lavish shopping. The easy road lies ahead — online shopping. Sugar, spice, and everything nice, come right to their doorsteps.
No matter what the season is, Malayalis love to take a bite of cake and raise a toast. Here’s what Sabeela Althaf, a home baker from the capital city, is doing this Onam. Her four-year-old online cake shop, this time around, has come up with a different idea. Theme cakes for Onam. A passionate baker, she manages baking and making single-handedly.
“For every festive season, I make theme cakes according to orders. Mayilpeeli and Vamanan themes are Onam favourites. People want these for Thiruvonam and the days after that. There’s a limited order and supply. Hence, the clients are those in my close circuits,” says Sabeela.
The cakes are supplied within city limits from her tiny unit in Kowdiar. She says this is the first time she gave Onam-themed cakes a thought. All types of flavours work well for these cakes. But the juicy Red Velvet continues to be an all-time favourite.
Online grocery shops are a favourite this Onam. Seasoned traders know the market pulse so much so that they welcome the buyers with attractive offers. “Our door delivery system operates online and over phone orders. Many people make phone calls. Basic festive essentials — like banana chips, milk and butter — are in high demand. Since four years, we have been offering door delivery of products and one thing in common is discount coupons. If they purchase for a certain amount, a gift coupon is given as a reward,” says Shanavas L. of Kunnil Hyper Market near Infosys campus, Kazhakkoottam.
