Kerala Agricultural University sells organic vegetables
Thrissur: The two-day Onam market organised by Kerala Agricultural University ( KAU) to make available safe to eat vegetables and value added products at reasonable rates was inaugurated by K . Rajan MLA here on Friday. The products in the Onam market were sold out in two days and the market concluded on Saturday. The first sale was conducted by Dr P. Rajendran, vice-chancellor. director of Extension Dr S. Estelitta presided over the inaugural function.
In addition to major vegetables and banana bunches, coconut oil, turmeric powder, garcina, and vegetable seedlings were available in the market. The harvesting of vegetables cultivated in the Hi-tech nursery under Agriculture Research Station (ARS), Mannuthy was inaugurated by C.N. Jayadevan MP. ‘Horticorp’s intervention’ KAU officials said that such markets along with the government intervention in market had prevented escalation of vegetable prices in the run up to Onam.
The pre-festival trend of soaring prices has been stalled due to effective steps taken by Horticorp in collaboration with State department of Agriculture and Vegetable and Fruit Promotion Council Kerala . The prices in 400 odd Horticorp stalls across the state has set the trend in steady prices. The trend in August has predicted a price of Rs 100-120 per Kg for Nendran Banana, an inevitable commodity for Onam , but the present price is around Rs 70 per Kg, lower than what prevailed in August, KAU and Horticorp officials said in a release on Saturday.
