Doctor Shares Craziest CT Scan of Parasitic Infection Linked to Undercooked Pork

A CT scan of a person suffering from a parasitic infection caused by Pork Tapeworm was shared by a Us-based doctor on X.

Dr Sam Ghali, an emergency physician, shared the “craziest CT scan he has ever seen” on X. Doctor in his post mentions that the person is suffering from Cysticercosis which is a parasite infection caused by “ingestion of larval cysts of Taenia Solium, also known as: Pork Tapeworm.”

As mentioned in the post, the parasitic infection is caused by consuming undercooked pork.

The image shows tiny rice-shaped particles around the bones in the lower body of the infected person.

The doctor said that after 5-12 weeks these cysts evolve within the gastrointestinal tract into mature adult tapeworms. This condition is known as Intestinal Taeniasis.

Dr Sam further states that after the eggs are ingested they release larvae, penetrating the intestinal wall and invading into the blood and later spreading to anywhere in the body. The larvae’s common destinations are brain, eyes, subcutaneous tissues, and skeletal muscles and ultimately forms cysts.

The larva can end up travelling to the brain in certain patients, where they form cysts in actual brain tissue and it can lead to headaches, confusion, seizures, and other serious neurologic problems, said the Doctor.

“So the moral of the story here is do your best to keep clean, always wash your hands, and never, ever eat raw or undercooked pork,” he said.

Treatment:

Dr Sam Ghali said, “Treatment options include anti-parasitic therapy, steroids, anti-epileptics (neurocysticercosis), and surgical removal.”
