Experts Vouch for Ultrasound Technologies to Detect Cancers
Hyderabad: Over 200 medics attended a symposium on gynaecological cancers in Hyderabad on Sunday, where experts asserted that high-resolution imaging provided by ultrasound is the preferred method to detect gynaecological cancers.
The symposium titled 'Ultrasonography of the Adnexa and Endometrium: Optimising Diagnosis in Everyday Practice' was organised by the Fernandez Hospital Educational and Research Foundation at a star hotel here. It was chaired by expert in gynaecological ultrasound Dr Mala Sibal.
Practising gynaecologists, radiologists, pathologists and postgraduates deliberated on the uses of advanced ultrasound technologies.
The symposium concluded that high-resolution imaging enables early and accurate detection of abnormalities in the reproductive system (such as ovarian cysts or growths in the uterus) and early detection is necessary for timely intervention.
It was also noted that ultrasound can differentiate between benign and malignant growths.
Dr Mala Sibal said, “Ultrasound is the diagnostic modality of choice in gynaecology. Despite advances in ultrasound technology, emerging literature in the field, and the tremendous impact of accurate and early diagnosis on appropriate medical management, quality ultrasound services are still scarce in many parts of the world. There is significant potential for its expanded use in improving women's healthcare.”
