Lack of Vitamin D Can Lead to Early-Onset Spinal Deformities: Expert

The importance of Vitamin D and its impact on spinal health was emphasized by Prof Dr S Bakhtiar Choudhary at a recent TEDx talk. Speaking on the occasion, the senior doctor spoke about how Vitamin D insufficiency can cause a bent spine in young individuals. Typically, this chronic condition is seen in adults over the age of 30.

While 80% of Vitamin D comes from sunlight, the rest can be supplemented by diet. "The frozen shoulder syndrome and joint stiffness, among other conditions, can be prevented if you maintain adequate levels of the crucial Vitamin," he said, adding that acting in time can help prevent complications and the need for surgery.

As a renowned war veteran and sports medicine specialist with over 40 years of experience, Dr Chaoudhary has done groundbreaking research into several syndromes. Also a martial artist, an award-winning researcher, an author, and a passionate advocate for ecological education, he said, "I have saved about 10,000 chronically ill patients from agonizing pain. Just in urban India, three lakh people are operated upon every year. People are not aware of what vitamin D deficiency can do to their lives. Children, housewives, and IT professionals, among others, are suffering from severe levels of deficiency. Vit D deficiency starts from a young age," the doctor said.
Dr. Choudhary said that the Frozen Shoulder Syndrome, in the main, hasn't been studied adequately. "Only two detailed research papers exist so far. In Africa, I found many children suffering from this," he said. Besides Vitamin supplements, physical discipline is also required to take care of oneself. "You need to align your body movements and functions with the dynamics of your spine. Test yourself for Vitamin D deficiency at least once every year," he said, advising patients to never go for the overkill. "Don't take supplements throughout the year. Too much can be too bad and lead to deleterious calcium deposits in your body," he said.
