National Conference on Vulvar Health Convenes at KIMS Hospital

Experts Emphasize the Importance of Awareness and Timely Treatment for Women’s Health Issues

Hyderabad: A national conference on vulvar health was held at KIMS Hospital in Secunderabad over the weekend, bringing together gynecologists, dermatologists, and specialists from eight states across India. The event highlighted a range of health issues impacting women, often overlooked due to social stigma or lack of awareness, including symptoms such as itching, burning sensations, and urinary incontinence experienced during coughing or sneezing. Experts at the event stressed that untreated, these conditions could lead to more severe health risks, including cancer.

The two-day conference provided a platform for doctors from India and abroad to discuss the latest advancements in urogynecology and dermatology. Renowned specialists such as Dr. Hope Catherine Hefner from the University of Michigan and Dr. Rajal C. Patel from Northwestern University School of Medicine shared insights on the latest treatments and diagnostic approaches for addressing vulvar and other urogynecological challenges. They emphasized the importance of early diagnosis and specialized care for conditions related to the vulvar region, which can be prone to a variety of skin-related issues.
Dr. Anuradha Koduri, Head of the Urogynecology Department at KIMS Hospital, along with Dr. Neena Desai, laparoscopic and robotic surgeon, and Dr. P. Balamba, former Head of Gynecology at Osmania Hospital, served as the organizing chairs for the event. Dr. Koduri underscored the need for patience and empathy in treating women with these sensitive health issues, noting that thorough examinations are essential to uncover underlying problems, some of which may be in early stages of serious conditions like cancer.
Dr. Nirmala Papalkar and Dr. Bindupriya from KIMS Hospital’s Urogynecology Department highlighted additional prevalent conditions among women, such as pelvic organ prolapse and loss of bladder or bowel control. They noted that, while awareness is gradually increasing in urban areas, there remains limited understanding and access to treatment in rural regions. The doctors encouraged women experiencing these issues to seek early treatment at specialized centers like KIMS, which guarantees confidentiality for all patients.
This conference saw significant participation from gynecologists, dermatologists, and plastic surgeons across India, including prominent specialists such as Dr. Naina Madnani, Dr. G. Venkataramana, Dr. K. Bhoomesh Kumar, Dr. V. Anand Kumar, Dr. N. Hemant Kumar, and Dr. Prashant Tyagi. In addition to Telangana and Andhra Pradesh, attendees came from states including Delhi, Assam, Punjab, Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh, Odisha, Karnataka, and Tamil Nadu, exchanging insights and sharing the latest medical recommendations on vulvar health care.
