Regenerative Medicine: The Game-Changer for Orthopedic Conditions
In a conversation with Dr. Venkatesh Movva, a specialist in Regenerative Medicine and founder of RegenOrthoSport in Hyderabad and Dallas, we learn about how regenerative medicine can transform lives. “Regenerative medicine is a new term that’s gaining popularity,” Dr. Movva explains. “It’s about regenerating damaged tissues, rather than allowing them to degenerate. Our focus is on orthopedic regeneration, specifically targeting joints, muscles, ligaments, and bones.”
Regenerative medicine, according to Dr. Movva, is used to treat various orthopedic conditions, including arthritis, ligament tears, cartilage loss, and tendon damage. “We have been doing this for 20 years, and it’s proven to be effective in mild to moderate stages,” he assures. However, in advanced stages, surgery may still be necessary. “Not at any stage, it can help heal arthritis or halt the progression of arthritis at mild, moderate stages,” Dr. Movva clarifies. “Stage 4 arthritis needs a knee replacement or a shoulder replacement or a hip replacement, that kind of procedure.”
The primary components of regenerative medicine include stem cells derived from bone marrow, platelets from blood, cytokines, growth factors, and modalities like ultrasound, exercise, and hyperbaric oxygen therapy. “These cells that we use are the patient’s own cells, when you use your own cells, there is no question of a rejection, or any tumor formation,” Dr. Movva emphasizes.
For early-stage conditions, regenerative medicine can be a game-changer. “Why opt for surgery when you can repair damaged tissues with your own cells?” Dr. Movva asks. “This approach avoids complications associated with surgery and allows patients to maintain their natural joint function.” However, even in early stages, surgery may be necessary in cases of complete ligament tears or severe fractures. “Occasional exceptions exist, but regenerative medicine is suitable for most patients,” Dr. Movva reassures.
Dr. Movva stresses the importance of collaboration between orthopedic surgeons and regenerative medicine specialists. “We need to work together to provide patients with comprehensive care and informed choices.” To perform regenerative medicine procedures, physicians require specialised training and permissions from authorities like the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR).
Despite its potential, regenerative medicine is often shrouded in misconceptions. “Some people claim it’s a scam, or that it can cause cancer or tumors,” Dr. Movva says. “These are baseless claims. Regenerative medicine is a recognised field with significantly improved results.” Another misconception is that regenerative medicine can cure everyone. “PRP only works very early or tendinitis situations, it does not really help arthritis, it does not save stage four people,” Dr. Movva clarifies.
Compared to surgery, regenerative medicine procedures are generally more affordable. “PRP type procedures are much, much lower, significantly lower, in the thousands range,” Dr. Movva explains. However, post-procedure care is crucial. “Patients must commit to physical therapy, exercise, and lifestyle changes to optimise results,” Dr. Movva emphasizes. “We guide patients through this process to ensure they take ownership of their recovery.”
Insurance coverage for regenerative medicine varies globally, but Dr. Movva anticipates increased recognition and coverage as evidence and data accumulate. Most regenerative medicine procedures are outpatient-based, with minimal downtime and rapid recovery. “Recovery is much faster because it’s not a surgical procedure, so there’s no cutting, there’s no downtime involved,” Dr. Movva concludes.
As regenerative medicine continues to advance, Dr. Movva’s expertise and insights offer hope to those seeking innovative, effective treatments for orthopedic conditions. By understanding the potential of regenerative medicine, patients can make informed choices about their care, opting for minimally invasive, cutting-edge solutions that prioritise their well-being.
