Part and parcel' of nuclear family

Onasadya being increasingly home-delivered.

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: It’s not news that Malayalees elsewhere in the world and in India, pre-book their Onsadaya and dine at hotels to celebrate their state festival. However, with more nuclear families and working women here, Onasadya is also being increasingly home delivered. Almost every restaurant both predominantly vegetarian and even non-vegetarian have been offering Onasadya, mostly based on booking.

“It does not make sense to cook 20-30 dishes for just two to four people. In the old days, Onsadya was made by group of women for joint families. Now, there are working woman at home who barely have one or two days holidays and they would rather not slog in the kitchen,” said Sandhya V.S. of Kuravankonam who has booked her Onasadya. She along with her husband has pre-booked a home delivery for Rs 249 each. The food will be delivered in re-usable cans.

“Last year, I ate Onasadya from a hotel at Bakery junction. It was too crowded,” said Nisha Gangadharan, who has decided that she would rather have it delivered at home this year and has booked a budget sadya for Rs 199. The cost can go upto '1400+taxes at five star hotels. Prominent caterers were hardselling their Onasadya over the radio. A restaurant on the Kazhakoottam- Kovalam bypass was serving a non-vegetarian sadya by replacing each of the vegetarian dishes with a similar looking non-vegetarian delicacy.

Home delivery orders were being taken over Facebook by restaurant owners. “Over the last two years, there has been a tremendous increase in those who come to have a sadya at our restaurant. This year, we have got 45 orders for home delivery and hope to get more,” said an employee of a Keshavadaspuram-based restaurant.
