Eat, exercise & hydrate!
There’s no escaping from hash-tagged post workout selfies and ‘fit’gramers that clutter our feeds. But, if you often find yourself gasping at what your childhood buddy’s pre-workout meal looks like; it’s time to let the feeling sink as most millenials take their fitness seriously. On World Health Day, we take a deeper look at how young Bengalureans approach the three important prerogatives that fall under the category of health – diet, exercise and hydration. From stretches during office breaks to fancy teas, Bengalureans are taking their health game up a notch!
“Taking life as it comes helps me keep fit, mentally and physically. I don’t take health and a good metabolism for granted. There’s always 45 mins - 1 hour of time that I give myself to do some outdoor/ workout activity. At work, I try to do stretches in between breaks!” shares Aakash Nambiar, a social media manager, Sprinklr. An intrepid healthy eater, he reveals what makes its way into his snack box every day,
“I mostly munch on dry fruits like dates and watermelon seeds. Water is the best beverage for me and I usually have it in plenty. Avoid packaged and processed food like the plague!”
For 24-year-old Carolyn Theresa Simon, a yoga instructor and food writer, the secret to great health is beginning you day a tad differently. “I don’t bank on caffeine overdose in the morning. My day starts with a warm cup of Rooibos tea with lemon. Then I head straight to my mat to practice my yoga routine. I try to focus on eating locally sourced food and try to follow the principles of ayurveda. So you'll find me eating a light meal of vegetables, rice, fruits throughout the day. Since it's summer, I also like to sip on Nimbu pani, chaas and fresh juices,” she elaborates. RJ Evita, a popular radio professional feels keeping yourself hydrated tops her list of ways to get healthy. “I’m terrible at doing diets. I’m forever failing at them... however staying hydrated is something I do very diligently. I have this giant water bottle that goes with me everywhere. I’ve also started to make it a practice to get a health check once in a while just to ensure everything is functioning the way it should.”
GOOD SLEEP, A MANDATE: For those who revel in the thrill of successfully wading through an all nighter, the trend has lost its lustre. Young and health conscious city folk believe in catching some good sleep daily and there are no ways about it. Popular cyclist best known as Bikey Venky, adds, “No matter what, you can always make time for six hours of sleep. I also believe the quality of your sleep depends on your overall functioning. Eating clean helps you get better sleep. I start my day with a one hour cycling workout on my home trainer followed by a smoothie with the goodness of greens, beetroot and fruits. That provides me all the nutrients that I need to recover from the hard work out and get through my day. Eating clean could mean weeding unnecessary processed sugar out of your diet and adding lots of greens, fresh vegetables and fruits to it.” Vouching by similar lines, Aakash signs off by stating, “Try to get seven hous of sleep everyday. In short it's eat clean, be active and sleep well. If these 3 things are well balanced you will be the healthiest and happiest person. Treat your body as a temple. The rest will follow.”
