Powerful Poses

Yoga headstands and handstands offer multiple benefits to the mind and body, provided you do them right.

Yoga teaches you the discipline to live your life. It helps you to stay calm, focused and energised throughout the day without taking any energy tablets or visiting a doctor.

Pratibha Agarwal explains the benefits of headstand and handstand yoga.“If you get the right idea and the right way of practicing the headstand yoga, it becomes a very restorative-meditative practice. Usually the heart has to pump more blood and make extra efforts on a daily basis. But when it comes to the headstand, the heart starts to relax,” says Pratibha.

Headstand yoga is best practiced once a day, and is believed to be very good for your lymphatic system as it removes toxins from the body. However, Pratibha cautions, “It’s very important to practice it properly. Good shoulder and arm strength is needed. If the arms are not strong, the weight goes to the head and impacts the neck.”

Similarly, to do a handstand, you need a proper alignment of your body and good wrist strength. Otherwise it might lead to a wrist injury. “I have seen many youngsters who want to straightaway do headstands and handstands, and end up hurting their necks and wrists. You have to build up strength first. It’s a lot of fun to practice once you know how to do it right. Just do not do it on a full stomach,” she explains.

“Yoga is a lifestyle which should be as important as education is. Why do people worry? Because they think of their future and their past. In yoga, we have to stay in the present. You have to be focused. Since you are not bothered about the past or the future, it makes you a calm person,” says Pratibha.
