Sterilisation: Men take a back seat

To motivate men, the Telangana government doles out a cash prize of Rs 5,000.

Hyderabad: Despite incentives and awareness campaigns, men in the city are sulking to undergo vasectomy. Despite the Rs 1,450 incentive to lure men to undergo family planning, the percentage of male sterlisation is low in Hyderabad.

Men lag behind in birth control in Hyderabad, according to the family planning statistics. Out of 35,495 family planning surgeries in Hyderabad from April 2016 to September 2017, there were only 783 vasectomies, said BP Anand Kumar, statistical officer, district medical office.

The health and family welfare department conducts motivational campaigns at which men are counselled to undergo the no scalpel vasectomy (NSV) a half an hour surgery that does not require hospitalisation. To motivate men, the Telangana health and family welfare department doles out a cash prize of Rs 5,000 for vasectomy surgery.

Dr K Padmaja, district medical and health officer, said that there is a misconception among men that they will lose libido if vasectomy is done and they will not be able to do strenuous work like lifting heavy objects.

She added, “Despite awareness campaigns, many men are still hesitant. It is a simple procedure. To encourage men, we are also providing Rs 1,450 whereas it is Rs 880 for women. We are planning to improve the scope or our awareness campaigns.”
