Low carb diets like Paleo and Keto can increase risk of birth defects

The findings point towards the need for pregnant women to get adequate dietary folic acid.

People in every part of the world are going for different diets in their bid to either live healthy or achieve fitness goals. But while several diets may help them achieve their desired lifestyle or body image, are they really beneficial in all aspects?

While low carb diets like Atkins, Paleo and Keto are popular across the globe thanks to celebrity endorsements and online trends, a new study finds it may pose a risk for women having babies. Research revealed that women who stick to such diets have a 30 percent higher chance of having children with neural tube birth defects.

The defects include malformations of the spine and spinal cord; and anencephaly which is the absence of major parts of the brain and skull. The findings point towards the need for pregnant women to get adequate dietary folic acid.

Keto diet helps people shed kilos by forcing their body to burn fat for energy and Atkins as well as Paleo function in a similar manner. But the study suggests that women may have to take a break from this diet when they are expecting.
