Experts hail AI in health care
HYDERABAD: Experts in medical sciences hailed the role of artificial intelligence in revolutionising the field of medicine and treatments, at the fifth edition of an event titled IMA-TSCON at AIG Hospitals on Saturday.
Prof. Joseph Sung, senior vice president (health and life sciences) and dean, Lee Kong Chian School of Medicine, Nanyang Technological University, Singapore, was among the dignitaries present at the IMA-Hyderabad North event.
Dr Sung said, “Artificial Intelligence and big data have revolutionised medicine and precision medicine, something that is tangible. AI has permeated different levels of the healthcare system as it makes the diagnosis of any disease faster and the interpretation of data much faster than a clinician’s, with more details. AI has also made a huge impact on images, such as MRI, and histology. A generated AI is also bringing groundbreaking results.”
Dr Sung cited methods such as optical biopsy through AI, which enabled macroscopic detection and magnified characterisation, to detect a malignant tumour that could be seen by the human eye.
“AI could help in endoscopy to improve the detection of polyps in the colon. The research found that AI was effectively efficient in detecting malignant or benign tumours with consistency,” he said.
Dr Sung further stressed that it was important to produce significant and robust clinical data to prove the utilisation of AI.
He said that it was important to ensure equity in terms of providing medical care and accessibility to lower-income groups and not restrict the advanced technology to those who could afford it.
Dr Sung stressed that AI was there to complement the doctors and clinicians, and not to replace them and that AI would further strengthen the role played by clinicians and doctors worldwide.
Dr Nageshwar Reddy, the head of AIG Hospitals, said that Dr Sung, with his extensive background in medical research, brought a crucial discussion in the field of medicine on the occasion.
