Ooh! Bedroom lucky charms and jinx talk
Intimacy secrets, and superstitions spill out of the bedroom, experts shed light

Like it or not, intimacy and superstitions have a way of crawling into our lives—even into the bedroom. Many modern couples have found that skipping intimacy before a big event or setting up rules
for that extra burst of passion brings in more love and luck. But is it true?
Moonstruck Moments
No matter how modern we become, some traditions and superstitions always catch up with us. One common belief held by many athletes, performers, and even politicians is that engaging in intimacy before a big event can drain energy and weaken the individual's focus. Intimacy is seen as a tool for distraction and pleasure. Many swear by the notion that abstaining helps them stay sharp and maintain peak performance at work. ‘’Sometimes having that gap in intimacy makes you miss your partner more, makes you miss that intimacy more, makes you miss their body more,” says Dr. Tanaya Narendra, Sexual health expert.
Red My Bed
Red is a colour of passion and deep desire, it evokes a sense of strength which is why many lingerie stores have red as their go-to colour for igniting intimacy. Many believe that wearing red lingerie or using red bedsheets can spice up their love life. While no scientific evidence supports this, many couples swear by it, believing that the colour creates a more passionate atmosphere.
Feng Shui Your Freak On
Feng Shui is the Chinese practice of harmonizing energy, it holds specific rules for bedroom arrangement and it’s said that the bed should have a solid wall behind it to promote stability in relationships. However, placing the bed in line with the door is said to bring negative energy and possible disturbances in your love life. Clutter in the bedroom is believed to create chaos in a relationship, while a well-arranged space fosters intimacy and peace.
Mirror Mantras
One of the most well-known bedroom superstitions is that mirrors facing the bed bring bad luck, restless sleep, and even infidelity. There is a saying that mirrors trap energy and they invite unwanted spirits. The paranormal aspect might play a role here which leads couples to avoid keeping mirrors in the bedroom. “I simply don’t feel comfortable looking at my reflection in the mirror when I’m intimate with my partner,’’ says Sanya Malhotra a Mumbai-based fashion stylist. This discomfort, whether rooted in tradition or personal experience, is why many couples avoid placing mirrors near the bed.
Lovers in Lunar Sync
It is believed that the full moon is said to amplify passion, romance, and even fertility. Some cultures trust that aligning intimacy with lunar cycles can enhance emotional connections to a deeper level. Couples even plan their intimate moments around the moon’s phases, believing it deepens their bond and heightens emotions. “Superstitions give people a sense of control over their relationships,” explains Dr. Meera Sharma, a psychologist specializing in couples’ therapy. “If wearing red or avoiding mirrors makes someone feel more confident and secure, then in a way, it works.”
Mystic or Meaningful
Leaving colour and cosmic energy at the side, many believe that crossing your legs during intimacy can block the flow of sexual energy
and it leads to disrupting intimacy that can trouble your emotional bonding. Placing shoes under the bed is yet again said to invite stress, arguments, and turbulence in relationships.
To even this out, rose quartz– also known as the stone of love is often placed under pillows or near the bed to promote harmony. It brings trust, healing, and emotional bonding– Bells and wind chimes are said to refresh the sexual energy of a space and prevent stagnation.
Many followers of Vastu shastra and feng shui avoid placing their heads towards the north as it interferes with restful sleep and diminishes romantic connection.
Dr. Tanaya Narendra adds, “There’s no direct physical health effect from most of these practices, but mentally and emotionally,
they can make a difference. Rituals can ground people and create shared meaning.”
Lucky Charms
At the end of the day, bedroom superstitions are what you make of them. While science may not always back them up, they add an element of tradition and routine. “If a certain belief or ritual brings joy to a couple and strengthens their bond, there’s no harm in embracing it,” says Neena Mehta, a spiritual healer.
Whether you light a special candle before bed, choose your bedsheets based on colour symbolism, or enjoy the mystique of the full moon, superstitions in the bedroom remind us that love and connection go beyond logic — they are sometimes, mysterious.
