Mumbai is set to witness another edition of Raell Padamsee’s Rise Up for Equality Festival, a transformative event dedicated to fostering women’s safety and equality in Maharashtra. Organized by the Create Foundation in collaboration with actress Lushin Dubey, the festival blends art and activism to inspire societal change. Hosted at the Sophia Bhabha Auditorium, Breach Candy, on December 14 and 15, this year’s event promises compelling performances addressing women’s empowerment and resilience.
A Legacy of Impact
The 2023 edition of the festival marked a significant milestone, with partnerships forged between Raell Padamsee, the Mumbai Police, Maharashtra Government, and Judiciary. The event was graced by Mumbai Police Commissioner Vivek Phansalkar, who endorsed the initiative. A highlight was the presentation of the ‘103 Rakhee’ by Padamsee to the Commissioner, emphasizing the importance of the 103 Helpline supported by the Mumbai Police’s Nirbhaya Squad. The helpline ensures rapid assistance to women in distress, with response times as short as a few minutes.

This year’s festival features two powerful plays performed by Lushin Dubey, focusing on women’s resilience and justice.
Day 1: ‘Untitled’ (December 14)
Inspired by Vijay Dan Detha’s Nyari Nyari Maryada and Dario Fo’s Medea, this solo performance explores the journey of a Rajasthani queen breaking free from patriarchal traditions to reclaim her identity. The play symbolizes defiance and the unyielding spirit of women.Day 2: ‘Aruna’s Story’ (December 15)
Adapted from Pinky Virani’s book, this poignant play recounts the life of Aruna Shanbaug, a nurse who survived a brutal attack but spent 42 years in a coma. Her ordeal led to landmark legal reforms, including the debate on passive euthanasia in India.
