Romantic Run Dating Mantra

Tired of apps, run clubs and walking groups have become the new dating hotspots for urban singles

Urban youngsters have hit the ground running for love and romance. In an era where dating apps dominate the search for love, a growing number of singles in metro cities are lacing up their running shoes and joining ‘run clubs’ and ‘walking groups’ to find their soulmates. Frustrated with endless swiping and superficial chats, young professionals are turning to run clubs and walking groups as organic, low-pressure spaces to meet like-minded people. The trend is catching on rapidly, with fitness communities emerging as the new dating grounds.

Love On The Run
There is a valid reason why singles are opting for fitness over dating apps. The success rate of forming meaningful relationships through these fitness-based social groups appears to be significantly higher than modern dating apps and hook-ups. “For the first time in years, I actually enjoyed meeting new people,” says Shruti Verma, (32), a marketing professional from Bengaluru. “On apps, conversations often fizzle out, but in a run club, you naturally build a bond. It’s not forced—it just happens.”
Many urban singles echo Shruti’s sentiment. Unlike dating apps, which often prioritize appearances and instant chemistry, run clubs and walking groups allow individuals to get to know each other gradually. Shared experiences — like encouraging a running partner to finish a tough stretch or discussing fitness goals — help foster genuine connections.
Fit To Mingle
Recognizing this shift, several fitness communities and running groups are adapting to accommodate singles looking to mingle. In cities like Mumbai, Delhi, Hyderabad, Pune and Bengaluru, events such as ‘Singles Run Nights’ and ‘Walk & Talk Meetups’ are being organized to help people find potential partners in a relaxed, health-focused environment.
“Running in a group already creates a sense of camaraderie, and when people share common goals — like training for a marathon — it builds trust,” says Aakash Sinha, (leader and founder of a local run group, Mumbai) “Now, we’re seeing more young people from the locality join not just for fitness, but also to meet people.”
Even dating apps are taking notice. Platforms like Bumble and Hinge are now sharing information about local fitness-based singles events, allowing members to connect in person rather than through screens.
Walk The Talk
Dating experts say the effectiveness of these groups lies in their natural, pressure-free environment. “On a dating app, there’s immediate judgment based on profile pictures and bios. But when you meet someone during a run or walk, it’s all about shared experiences,” explains Nikita Nayar, a relationship coach. “You get to see their personality, how they handle challenges, and even their sense of humour — all in a more authentic way than a curated online profile.”
Additionally, physical activity releases endorphins, which boost mood and confidence — two key factors in attraction. Running and walking groups provide an alternative to the usual bar or coffee shop meetups, making interactions feel more organic.
Rahul Mehta, (34), a software engineer from Mumbai, met his girlfriend through a local run club. “We started off as running partners, and over time, we realized we had a lot in common beyond fitness. We didn’t have to go through awkward first-date small talk because we already knew each other’s habits and quirks.”
Bumpy Road Ahead
While run clubs and walking groups offer a promising alternative to traditional dating methods, they also come with challenges. For one, not everyone joins these groups with dating in mind. Some members may prefer to focus solely on fitness, and not all interactions will lead to romance.
Additionally, the casual setting means that unlike dating apps, there’s no clear indication of who’s single and looking. Some clubs have introduced wristbands or designated social events to make it easier for singles to connect without disrupting the primary focus of the group. “We encourage members to approach connections naturally,” says Sinha. “Fitness is the main goal, but if something more happens along the way, it’s a great bonus.”
Fitness-Based Dating
With more people seeking alternatives to traditional dating methods, the trend of meeting partners through fitness groups is only expected to grow. The pandemic accelerated people’s desire for meaningful, in-person interactions, and run clubs provide the perfect blend of socializing and self-improvement.
Dating apps may still dominate the romantic landscape, but for those who are tired of endless swiping, finding love on the run—or during a morning walk—might just be the refreshing change they need.
