A Fundy funda

A trip to Saint John (New Brunswick) and Halifax in Nova Scotia is a peek into an interesting water phenomenon.

Normally one is over excited about going on a cruise. As far as I was concerned, the cruise route, ship and being aboard were the least exciting experiences. As they always say, you discover and experience wonders when you least expect it. This cruise was about allowing things to take its own route, as we cruised along different ports.

Saint John (New Brunswick) — Located on the Bay of Fundy was the third port we anchored at, a couple of friends and I chose to discover the place in a local tourist Hop On Hop Off bus. Our tour director was very excited to explain about a particular phenomenon which happens at the Bay of Fundy.

This amazing phenomenon of the Reversing Rapids is a sight to behold. If your time is just right, like ours, you can watch the Bay of Fundy’s monstrously high tide reverse the flow of the mighty St John River, even as it pushes through a gorge. Get a spectacular view of the waves and whirlpools that result from nature’s tug-of-war from two parks that are perched upon cliffs.

This day-long excursion set my spirits high for the next anchor point Halifax — Nova Scotia The Halifax waterfront was a lively place teaming with tourists and locals alike. Not only does the place have a great view, but also an opportunity to mingle, enjoy local entertainment and seafood at many restaurants and seaside shacks! Perfect sunny weather, freshly brewed beer and beer batter fried Halibut fish and chips turned the foodie in me into a truly happy soul.

With my gastronomic palate being satisfied, off I trooped into a bus to Peggy’s Cove. This is one of the most visited spots in the Halifax region. It’s classic, historic red-and-white lighthouse officially known as the Peggy’s Point Lighthouse marks the entrance of St Margaret’s Bay. The stunning scenery as we drove up during the onset of fall, with Maple leaves just changing colour was a sight to capture in my mind forever.

One can spend a day walking and shopping in Peggy’s Cove Village. This is a working fishing village and one can peek into all kinds of fishing activities here. Get your hand at lobster fishing, view the lobster traps and fish nets that decorate the wharves and roadside. Sit by, watching fishing boats sail in and out of the wharf. Shop for souvenirs at the gift shops, enjoy an espresso and cookie on the deck at Beales while taking in the view of the cove.
