IRAN-tics for the soul

Sandalwood actress Neethu Shetty shares her experience backpacking through Iran.

My first-ever backpacking trip to Iran was with my friend, Manisha, who is an avid traveller. We stuck to a proper budget, stayed at people’s houses, walked to places, took the train and covered the whole of north, east, west and south of Iran within 18 days. I was able to understand my strengths and weaknesses in a beautiful country like Iran where people are cordial and respect one another.

Being a south Indian, spice was very hard to find, considering the bland flavours of Iranian cuisine but we tried Lavash, Turkish buttermilk, Jujeh Kebabs, Mahi (fish), Cantaloupe juice and Falooda from Shiraz, which I would recommend to anyone visiting Iran to try.

Every family goes out to the gardens with their best cutlery and Persian carpets for a picnic. It is also one of the best things about backpacking. In Yazd, we saw elderly men in bell bottoms, people living in old buildings, little girls selling green apples and men travelling on donkeys.

The essentials to travel in Iran would include burqas for women and formal clothes for men that cover their elbows. The cultural code has to be followed and studs on men or earrings on women are not appreciated. Follow a dress code and respect their culture.

Yazd, Shiraz and Kashan a must for scenic views and insights on pure Persian culture; Persepolis and Isfahan for their architectural greatness are the top five places I would say are a must-visit!
