Some FLEA'ting retreats
There’s nothing quite like spending a sunny summer day rummaging through store after store of unique hand-crafted products, be it for your home, your wardrobe or even your office desk. With winter furiously fading away into blazing summer, the city is all set to play host to a range of flea markets and bazaars, marking the beginning of the nostalgic few months that is summer.
Kicking off the season is the market that started it all, The Sunday Soul Sante on March 13 at ITPB Cricket Grounds. This time around, the theme is ‘neon’ so we’re expecting a riot of colours in addition to the mayhem that the sante usually is.
The coming together of food, music, fashion and all things fun, city-based band Best Kept Secret will be taking the stage. Also performing is the band Massive Vibe, an international act which includes artistes from six different countries — Britain, Israel, US, Germany, Australia and Sweden.
“The Soul Sante is always something I look forward to. Summer is my favourite season and so with this time’s theme being neon, March 13 couldn’t come soon enough. I love the food (read pandi curry and sannas from the Coorg food stall) and I also find that the home décor products on sale are quite rare,” shares Tia Bharadwaj, a marketing professional.
If you’re looking to encourage senior citizens, look no further than the romantic sounding, Silver Bazaar Under The Stars. While the ‘silver’ here is in keeping with the age (55 years and above) of the people who will be setting up stalls, they promise an eclectic selection of homemade munchies, handmade products and more. Described as a musical flea market, the event is organised by Silver Surfers Club, an organisation that works with retired citizens who use their skills to turn entrepreneurs. “The Silver Bazaar serves two purposes — to give senior citizens a platform to showcase home businesses and bridge the gap between young and old,” says the founder of Silver Surfers Club.” At this night market, to be held on April 2 at The Royal Orchid Hotel, expect decadent concoctions like pork sorpotel, quiches, other bakes, and even a stall selling handmade ice cream.
Falling under the authentic parameters of a ‘flea market’ with second hand goods and prices that are not bloated, The Declutter Sale and Flea Market, is an experience one must not miss. To be held on April 9, this event has no entry fee and no fee for setting up a stall either. With people encouraged to sell second hand and rarely used products, this one should be an interesting bazaar. “The whole point is to get people to declutter their homes,” says Rashmi R Padhy of Koove, the company behind the event. “We’ve got 290 entries for stalls, and we have to pare it down.
There are going to be a lot of clothes and accessories apart from décor,” reveals Vanathi Manoharan, an organiser. While the venue is yet to be announced, we suggest you check out their Facebook page for updates.
