Eggstacy after the agony

The rejoicing after Lent brings cheer to everyone in the city as people stock up on easter eggs and bunnies for the feasting ahead...

Easter eggs, chocolate bunnies and egg hunts have become an integral part of celebrating Easter, today. But, why eggs? Many cultures across the world believe that the egg is a symbol of new life, fertility and rebirth, which has been decorated with colours and used to add festivity to the occasion. But, as time went by, and new-age gimmicks came along, these eggs have kept up with changing trends, of the year 2018, and now come in different varieties, sizes, colours and materials. We find out where you can find the best Easter eggs and what are the new trends that have emerged in the city.

Anupama Amarnath, Chocolate Junction, has been making Easters eggs and bunnies for the past 10 years. Anupama explains, “Chocolate eggs sell the best during Easter as they are a good gift for your loved ones, and are also edible, often enjoyed by children. Some of the latest trends have been chocolate turned into the shape of toys, especially ones which look like avocados, coloured green on the outside but with a chocolate filling inside. But, I would say bunny-shaped chocolates and golden finished eggs sell the most during the season.”

Though, back in the day, things were different. Robert D’souza, a retired banker and foodie shares memories from some olden day Easter celebrations. D’souza recalls, “During those days, 35 years ago, Easter eggs were boiled eggs with a coloured eggshell, we would paint or dye them with different colours, and write a small note inside or just use it for decoration. But, then gradually over time, we started seeing eggs being made with icing sugar with boiled sweets inside. Then we started getting eggs wrapped in colourful foil. As we travelled abroad, we discovered chocolate eggs which are basically the trend right now.” And it looks like this trend will remain.

City-based chef Paul Besra from a city five star explores this tradition of eggs, which incidentally, his hotel has a large egg on display too, “The demand was not that high let’s say two years ago as much as it is right now. This year, the response has been enormous. People are looking to gift their friends and families custom-made eggs that come in numerous colours and styles and even with small notes in them.”

While social media is buzzing with different ways youngsters are celebrating Easter, and gifting one another, a young baker, who loves the Easter tradition, 19-year-old Dinesh Moses Katragada loves treating his family with hot cross buns, sugar cookies, carrot cupcakes and chocolate eggs. Dinesh says, “We celebrate this day for our saviour’s redemption and even though traditions are just man-made, the egg resembles a new life, which was similar to what Jesus’ message was to the world. I love gifting my friends these eggs, and writing a small note to them. I usually make them myself or sometimes opt for bakeries, for more options."
