Wearing many hats with ease

A journalist with a passion for dubbing, Jewel Baby has lent her voice to over 50 films.

Twenty four hours in a day is far too short for Jewel Baby, who has her hand in 10 different pies, sometimes all at the same time. Take a look at the different roles she plays — she is an RJ, VJ, a journalist, dubbing artist, model and an actor — and now you would understand why 24 hours passes in the blink of an eye for her. A typical day would have her playing a host at events or anchoring on TV, but an a typical day would also see her in the dubbing studios, lending her voice to leading actors or even taking her turn in front of the camera as an actor or model. So how does she walk the tightrope between all these, without ever missing a step? She answers, “It is simple — journalism is what keeps the fire burning in my home, whereas the other offshoots like dubbing, acting and modeling are what I am passionate about.”

Jewel had already decided that journalism was what she wanted to make a career in. So arming herself with a diploma in Journalism and Visual Communication, she stepped into the media field. Jewel started off as an RJ and soon moved to news reporting. That was just the beginning — soon she was anchoring for Akashvani and Doordarshan and then various other channels before she became a much sought-after name whenever a seasoned host was required to host or anchor shows.

Her voice, which can be modulated according to the demands of the occasion or medium, was soon noticed by the film industry. “That is how I started dubbing for films four years back. I have now dubbed for over 50 films including films like Richie and Parole.” What has her excited currently is her dubbing in the upcoming Premasutram, “I have dubbed for Priyal Gor and this required a different kind of a voice modulation because she plays a mermaid, so that was a very challenging experience,” she mentions.

The confines of the dubbing studio soon gave way to the studio sets where she started getting offers. But here, her real life crept into her reel life and she laughingly explains, “Most of the roles have been those of newsreaders like in Ramaleela and Rosapoovu. In fact, I get four to five newsreader offers every month and have become so typecast that I have been forced to reject those offers.” She has also managed to model for some leading brands in between — the reason why her face is familiar. Yes, Jewel has her plate full but she mentions it could be fuller if, “I get to play good character roles in films.”
