Disha Kerala' aims for social transformation

Students' initiative to help needy irrespective of religion, caste or creed

KOZHIKODE: “Disha Kerala” is a novel students’ initiative originated from Farook Arts and Science College. Final year student Dinu K. who had been in the limelight a few months back when he raised his voice against the gender discrimination in various educational institutions, is behind the initiative. Now leading more than 500 college and school student volunteers in the region, ‘Disha Kerala’ aims at helping the needy irrespective of religion, caste or creed.

This two-year-old registered organisation had divided the mission into three- Kootu (companionship), Idam (space) and Pacha (green). “Sometime back when I raised voice against the gender discrimination in my institution so many people from around the country came in support," he told DC. “This motivation itself was an inspiration to bring together this youth collective to do our bit for the society.” Kootu mainly aims at helping the long-term ill or bedridden children giving them individual care. Each volunteer has been given a small diary in which they jot down the needs of each child after visiting them.

"Later we fulfil their needs. At present, the initiative is carried out in Kozhikode, Malappuram, Thrissur and Thiruvananthapuram districts. Along with this initiative we also have started a concept of Paattuvandi and 'One day one Rupee' scheme," he said. Paattuvandi is where good singers in the group go to the street and collect money from public with their performance. In many schools, Disha has installed a box where students drop '1 every day for helping the needy children. The initiative Pacha aims at ensuring a pollution free environment.
