The enterprising Sopho-mores

City students are doing double duty as students who juggle with interesting and individual line of businesses.

There was a time when young aspiring engineers would open their own start-up companies or head to the west for further career prospects. Times have changed ever since. Now, young college students from the city are also turning entrepreneurs in diverse fields — fashion, jewellery, etc following their passion. Juggling studies and work, they are carving a niche for themselves in the start-up capital of India.

Mansi Daga, a BBA student of Jain University says, “There are 80 black and white posts from my friends featuring my jewellery rolled out on Facebook and Instagram feeds which marked the launch of my business (JustEmbellish). This venture has been bootstrapped and funded solely through my internship stipends during the third year of college and has taught me lots in terms of optimal utilisation of available resources. Right from starting off as a sterling silver brand to adding a full-fledged Bohemian style on a virtual platform, the journey has been outstanding. I source quirky and bold jewellery from various designers and make them available for both renting and purchasing on the two social media platforms.”

Mansi started off with a meagre capital and juggled it alongside college and internships, with weekends devoted to the business. She adds, “The beauty of the venture lies in the aesthetically shot pictures of budding fashion bloggers shot by upcoming photographers.”

Another set of college students are running a digital marketing business. “I was working online as a freelancer since the 11th standard. In my first year college, I along with a friend, Vaibhav, started my own business (Social Catalyzers) and gradually it scaled up and were later joined by Kalyan Kumar and Gaurav Nabh. I wanted to complete my degree as well. After all the hard work we have put into the business, my business partners were understanding and made sure my college is least affected by what we are doing. And my roommates made sure I submit assignments on time. I was blessed with good people around,” says Saurabh Tomar, a student of Christ University. He adds, “We have worked with over 40 international brands in the past year. Initially, my family was skeptical but now they understand my perspective.”

Starting a business is never easy, and a lot of effort, dedication, planning and capital is needed. Deepthi Urs, a 22-year-old college student also started her fashion business simultaneously (Pearlescent Events). “I was in my final year and thought of starting my own fashion designing company. I do costume designing. Since I had morning classes, I would plan and work on the business in the evening and on weekends.” Working on college and entreprenuerial ideas, these students are ready to take on the world!
