House parties have been around for quite sometime now. But namma ooru has found a new way to bring about a quirky twist even in this simple concept!
Merging house parties with the concept of meeting new people in new places, a number of Bengalureans have started opening up their private spaces and have begun to host house parties for like-minded people with various thematic activities, be it yoga, food or just plain ole’ fun. These open-out’s as they are called, were sprouted as a form of break from routine life.
“People in the city are always seeking out new places and experiences. But the thing with even those is that every place becomes mundane. That’s where private spaces come in because what better way to mingle with new people over common ideas than in your own house!” explains Arun Rafi, the founder of the community. “The informal and personal setting adds as a bonus for guests. It’s like the pop-up version of a restaurant,” he adds.
What is more appealing, is the idea of meeting like-minded people since most concepts are theme bases, according to Simran Oberoi. “People know what to expect. I focus on healthy baking and that’s what the theme was when I hosted my open out. I didn’t know most of the people who showed up and spending time, getting to know these people is just a good feeling. And since the concept is pre-decided by the host, only those who are interested in the idea attend, which makes the crowd niche. And they have all questions, so we get to share information and learn so much in the process, and continue to be in touch,” she smiles.
Agreeing with Simran, John Eapen, a beer expert opines, “The best part is that there are no restrictions or pressures that are there at venues – like time. Usually we end up staying much longer than agreed upon because we seem to have forgotten how to get to know new people. We often hang out in our own circles and aren’t exposed to different people and cultures. This way, we get to know so much! It also makes for a great opportunity for people to showcase their different talents – I got to explain so much about beer and teach people how to appreciate it.”
