In memeory of the buckaneers
Irrefutable, last evening was an event in itself! Just as the abrupt ban on Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 notes, in a bid to fight the hassle of black money, created furore; what followed was an undeniable chuckle-some brouhaha that had social media in a tizzy —through hilarious memes and goofy troll statuses, which literally had regular citizens having the last laugh! We document some of the funniest responses and talk to young Bengalureans who tell us more…
“Hey it’s my lucky day! Oh no, it’s a Rs 1,000 buck note!” read the status of Kamakshi Kamath, a young copy writer in the city. While that of Arjun Kamath, a renowned photographer read, “If you're on a date tonight, you know what to tip.”
And folks, if you thought the picture ended there, you are very, very wrong — twitterati were on a troll-roll since midnight, posting viral memes like.
As the context of the jokes comes as a no brainer, what truly added a smattering of fun was the ability of India’s savvy crop to look beyond the un-intimated inconvenience.
“On the day the announcement was made, I saw payTM using this opportunity to promote their business and I must say that was a smart move. Besides that, I spotted a lot of memes with the Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 rupee notes. The most hilarious one was selling peanuts wrapped in them. It’s funny. And the point of such memes are to lighten up a rather tense situation. Personally, I think it’s entertaining and rather interesting to see people looking at things from a lighter vein — especially on a medium that thrives on negativity. The jokes on everyone, so we might as well laugh it!” says Rajat S Bongale, a social media manager.
Echoing similar lines, Shekhar Vijayan, a city-based life coach and stand-up comedian opines, “Money is an elusive topic, and with something this huge, making a joke or meme around it is nothing but an eventuality. Indians have a sense of humour which is related to the need for cash and food. So, quite a few of the memes around are probably only one of the ways we exercise our right for speech and express our views. From my perspective, it’s nothing but the way the new-age democracy functions. And as long as we aren’t being overtly viscous, we should all probably just join the fun. Because, the essence of it all is to curb an underlying evil – the black money menace.”
