Dare devil riders' drag' acts!
Drag races have been banned for over a decade in the city, but the ban has now been lifted. And with a bang! The second edition of Bengaluru’s International drag race, taking place on the 24 and 25 September comes back with the promise of excitement, for those who love the adrenaline rush of driving over the speed limit.
The event which has been legalised and approved by the Youth Empowerment and Sports Government of Karnataka, also hopes to see some big faces from Bollywood as well as South stars, at the event!
And while spectators have some automobile candy to watch out for, drag enthusiasts are just glad to be back. “It has been around 10 years since a race has happened in the city on such a large scale,” says Zarar Ahmed, a racer who is looking forward to the event. And what is the racer looking forward to the most? “Burning rubber on the new and improved track for sure!. The previous tracks weren't as smooth, but this one looks amazing” says the excited 34 year old lad who is participating with his team Dare Devil Riders who not only drive super cars, but bikes as well!
The drag race which boasts of edge-of-the-seat close finishes, seems to be picking up among the youth as well. “The city has been on a low at the drag front since the ban, but events like these are encouraging for people who are passionate about the sport,” admits Zayeem Ahmed, another racer.
“More people are gaining interest in the sport – 10 years back there were only around 200 participants but now, there are more than 500 registrations, out of which many are enthusiastic college kids!” adds Zayeem who is kicked about whizzing on the tracks after the long break.
Vroom, comes with the promise of a bigger and better top-notch event in a much larger scale! “The last drag race was 10 years ago, so drag enthusiasts are certainly looking forward to burning rubber on the tracks,” says Tariq Mohsin, the organiser.
But what sets it apart from the rest of the races, is that “Safety comes first. We have taken a number of precautionary measures like a thorough check up of vehicles prior to the races,” he adds.
The sporting event though, is not only followed with utmost interest by racers, but also spectators! “There will be not only modified versions of Indian cars, but also high end cars like Lamborghinis, Maseratis, Ferraris and even bikes like the Kawasaki BMW, Yamaha and even Honda, KTM’s and more! So it’s a pleasure for the spectators who are into auto mobiles as well,” he adds in conclusion.
So those in need for speed, head to the Jakkur Aerodome!
