Mom’s kitchen diaries
A mother is the heart of the home says Mother Theresa. Mother is a super powerful word in this world. It has emotions, sharing, caring, cheering, encouraging and what not a mother does. She is everything in our lives. This beautiful Mother’s Day, which falls on every second Sunday of May blossoms across the globe.
We spoke to a few daughters and sons asked them to share some memorable moments both inside and outside the kitchen.
Being the only brother amongst five sisters, Yashpal Kasotiya, an employee in an MNC says his mom taught him how to manage work and handle family commitments too. ‘My mom is the real super hero for me, sharing conversations about my family gatherings, my daily routine etc.
I was taught to respect girls and manage things for my five sisters. But she gets annoyed when I end up working late and tell her that I am leaving office at 11 pm. She is a warm person and manages our large family effortlessly I say.
The only dream of not just my mother but every mother is to see their kids happy.”
Yashpal’s mom taught him how to cook daal paalak, mutton curry and aloo chole ki sabji . He has become so adept that his friends compliment him over his cooking. He also adds, ‘I then realise that she has a magic wand especially to use in the kitchen. She guides me step by step and it results in a delicious dish.
All I learnt from her is patience and management which every mother in the world has.” Sometimes his sisters and father are clueless when they laugh over their private jokes. He ends up saying, ‘The most memorable moment is when I was back from hostel with my job offer letter in hand. Those tears of happiness that flowed from her eyes is what I still remember.”
Nikita Shallet, an assistant professor at a private university, swears by her mother’s pasta, especially when she would visit home from hostel while studying. Nikita says, “All those dishes my mom would cook for me remain in my memory. I learnt to make mint and dhaniya sandwich from her for which I get compliments because I follow the step-by-step instructions she gave me.”
Nikita is extremely close to her mother and adds, “ I can talk to her about anything be it my work or friends. I share everything with my mom and she is so patient with me. She listens each and every word of mine. She also shares memories about her childhood days so enthusiastically. She has a good sense of music and asks me to listen to some of her favourites. The only comment we get to hear from the rest of my family when we both act weird is ‘both are the same.’
Sandhya AP, an employee in an MNC says that the cooking she learnt from her mother came from recipes that were handed down from her grandmother. “‘All my mom dishes are the secret recipes of her mom. Out of all the family dishes, I like the roti and yengai playa (stuffed brinjal) which my mom prepares. I have also leanrt to cook from her. We have a fabulous bond and there is so much that I have learnt and continue to learn from her.”
