KOZHIKODE: Deccan Chronicle reporters Anupama Mili and Amiya Meethal have bagged the first and second prizes, respectively, of the Kerala Media Award for Child Rights (English section), jointly instituted by the UNICEF and Kerala Child Rights Observatory. Anupama Mili, principal correspondent, Kozhikode bureau, bagged the prize for a story on the plight of Bangladeshi sex racket victims trapped in the prisons and juvenile homes in the state.

Her report on March 8 this year resulted in the release of three girls, who were first sheltered in the children’s home, and later in the ‘Aftercare home’ and once they turned 21, in the Mahila Mandiram. Amiya Meethal, senior reporter, Kozhikode bureau, was awarded the prize for his story on the plight of children employed by the rich as housemaids in the state.

The story was published on June 12. Both the winners received the awards from UNICEF Kerala/ Tamil Nadu chief Job Zachariah in Thiruvananthapuram on Monday. The other winners are Mini P. Thomas, special award, (The Week, feature section), and K.N. Sajesh, (Malayala Manorama, Malayalam section). The jury comprised Dr Sebastian Paul, K. Ampady, director, I&PRD and Siby Kattambally, assistant editor, Malayala Manorama.
