Chennai boy wins laurels at Taekwondo
Actor Sibi Sathyaraj is super proud today and why won’t he be? Son Dheeran has brought laurels by winning two gold medals in the weight and age category, at the 3rd Mumbai Consul General Cup, 2019-Open Taekwondo championships. The father of the gold medallist shares his happiness with DC,
“I feel really happy as I did not do anything like this when I was a kid. Although I was good at studies, I never really tried my hand at sports. My mom enrolled me for Karate when I was in class 5 but soon I lost interest and dropped out.”
Dheeran who has also signed up for tennis and piano turned up in the cut-throat competition held in Pune on November 9 and 10, of his own accord. “It was entirely his decision; Karthik, his coach had informed him about the event.”
Dheeran has always been a promising child, especially when it comes to the Korean martial art. “We have never pushed him- we just enrolled him for the martial art, and he developed an immense interest within days,” says Sibi, adding how the kid excels at kicks, one of the tricks of the combat sport, and achieves great heights - even above head level.
Parental pressure was never there and Dheeran has taken his own sweet time. The 6.5-year-old child, who is in class 1 at Sishya School, will practice 4 days a week and have dad holding the kicking board for him to practise.
“We had always wanted our child to learn some form of martial art.
Apart from the fun learning part, the art also enhances physical fitness and concentration power. H e was five when he first stepped into the world of this Korean martial art. Whether or not he wants to pursue it further, we will be happy in either case. We will respect his decision.”
The kid who trains in The Taekwon Dojang has a yellow belt to his credit now.
