Chennai has not had a wholesome northeast monsoon yet. After experiencing a dry spell between showers, Chennai people are looking for ways to conserve water.
Earth Fokus, a company formed by two city-based automobile engineering entrepreneurs have come up with a solution. DC gets in touch with them find out more about the same.
Roshan Karthik and Arun Subramaniam, BTech degree holders from the Madras Institute of Technology, have launched a nozzle named 'EcoMist' that converts the normal flow of water into mist.
The 'EcoMist', which is a brass nozzle, comes in a small cube shaped box. After fitting the nozzle, the box can be put in potting mud and a healthy surprise plant will grow from it. The old aerators can be replaced with this tiny nozzle. There's a small opening in the centre through which the mist comes out. The product components are a washer, the nozzle and the cap.
The water gets converted into sprinkles by the method of atomization, which because of the force of the water turns it into a mist. People can save around 95% water compared to a conventional aerator, as it gives 0.5 LPM (Litres per minute) compared to normal 10 LPM (Litres per minute) discharge.
The company offers 'QuaMist' for homes with two options. You can twist the cap anti-clockwise and the flow will be controlled. On an average, human's generally waste about 150 litres of water but with the mist nozzle can save about 95% of it.
Arun Subramaniam says that their mentor Najeeba Zabeer was a great support both in coming up with the concept and investing in the same. He says - “These products are made out of 100 per cent brass and not plastic. We wanted to use brass because it works better in terms of quality, and water conditions in our country differ from state to state, and even in areas in the same state. We wanted a nozzle that could sustain hard water (like in Chennai) for a long time. And it would be easier for the people to remove it and clean it as and when needed.”
“In future, we are planning to make it in large quantities to give the latest technology by the popular buyback option. We are not just saving water but also air and carbon output which is interconnected. We will re-melt the old brass and cast new rods and manufacture the whole thing,” says Arun.
