In love with the numbers game: Archana Kalpathi

The young director and CEO of AGS Cinemas is excited about the group's latest project.

A person who doesn’t mince words and stays true to her profession, Archana Kalpathi has come a long way. It is not surprising that the young entrepreneur from the Kalpathi family has entered business. “I am always in love with the numbers game, and that’s how I ended up being a businesswoman,” says Archana Kalpathi, who did her bachelor’s in computer science. With AGS Cinemas launching their third multiplex at T. Nagar, the young director and CEO of the company is a busy bee. Her third project, after being at the helm of business affairs at the company, Archana considers the recent project to be an ambitious one. “We took a few years to finish the project and I should say this — it is an outcome of sheer determination and hard work.” And what’s the reason behind choosing the bustling T. Nagar? “I have a personal connection with the place. I grew up in this neighbourhood and did my schooling here. Also, T. Nagar is a very attractive location, and that is the main highlight. It is a standalone property at a lovely spot — an apt place for the movie going crowd,” states Archana.

“It is a flagship property and we have worked hard on this theatre complex. Also, I didn’t want to compromise on the interiors while building the multiplex. That’s why it took time to complete,” says Archana.

As we can see, the final product is magnificent — an automated car parking facility, private lobbies and balconies for the screens. Coming from a family that is into film production for many years, Archana has seen the company grow from scratch. “After my studies, when my father asked to me join business, I didn’t give it a second thought. I took over the multiplex business, and was 21 when I built the first AGS Cinemas at Villivakkam. Then, Navalur AGS was born and now T. Nagar.”

So, being in the film business, is Archana interested in film direction? “Oh no! I’m not a very creative person. But yes, scripts do come to me and I hear them. If they are interesting I pass them on to my dad. The final decision-making authority is dad’s and both my uncles’. I love to watch films,” she says, adding, “Well, they do ask me opinions. But, apart from that, I have no connection with filmmaking and distribution.” According to the 32-year-old entrepreneur, running theatres is an amazing business. When quizzed about the increasing number of multiplexes in the city, Archana says that it is a healthy sign, as far as movie-watching is concerned. “The Chennai culture of watching cinemas is completely different. It is a staple, so it’s good to have as many theatres in the neighbourhood. Also, we can curb piracy to a large extent. Many people are watching pirated versions just because tickets are not available in the first few days. So, if more theatres come up in the city, it is really good.” Being an entrepreneur, Archana is not averse to competition. She considers it healthy.

Not only is she a strong and successful businesswoman, Archana is also a loving mother to seven-year-old Aditya. “I got married in 2007, and my husband is my greatest support and strength. My son too knows my busy schedule and he has never made a fuss about it. But I make sure to attend Aditya’s school functions whenever possible. I am thankful to have a wonderful family, who is proud of my work,” she sums up.
