Ramzan: Many break fast at street vendor's shop
KOZHIKODE: When the Maghrib azaan heralding the time of breaking the fast starts, one can see a large number of people gathered at a roadside eatery owned by K.V Samjad near Railway Cross at Oyitty Road in city. Here, the vendor is distributing fruits, three types of snacks and black tea for people to break their day-long fast, absolutely free of charge.
At a time when established eateries force people to pay through the nose during Ramzan, 39-year old Samjad is showing a meaningful way to celebrate it. Rich and poor together break the fast at Samjad’s eatery. Speaking to Deccan Chronicle, Samjad said that many people who couldn’t break their fast at home because they were travelling or any other issues found it useful to do it at his shop.
“Ramzan is the month which reminds us to remember other people in the world who do not have food and water. Charity is one of the extremely recommended acts during fasting. It says if some people are poor and cannot afford to give money then even a smile is an act of charity,” said Samjad. “When they have food from here, they will also pray for me and that’s the best gift I can ever receive,” he added.
Samjad, a native of Kinaserri, lives with his wife Fouziya and three children Nafeesa Farzana, Muhammed Davood and Yasar Arafat. It is with the help of porters and his friends that Samjad is arranging food for the people. “I am also a heart patient who is presently undergoing treatment. I am sure that the prayers of those who have food here will definitely help me become healthy,” Samjad added. This is the third consecutive year that Samjad is hosting people.
