A fitting gimmick
The team of Vinay Kuyya, who runs an eponymous channel on YouTube and a page on Facebook, is mighty excited. After all, their latest video, a spoof on actor Vijay Deverakonda’s blockbuster film, Arjun Reddy’s trailer is their first video to have reached out to so many people. And while the views on YouTube are just over 1.5 lakh, Facebook and WhatsApp users are being bombarded with the video by enthusiastic friends showing them a glimpse of the short film called Aruna Reddy, directed by Gopal Chauhan. What’s interesting is that the film is a replication of the coming-of-age-black comedy’s trailer, with the exception of its protagonist being a female, portrayed by Prathyusha Maggie.
“This has been a very exciting time for us. Spoofs have become a routine thing these days with many people making them. That’s how we decided to go in for a role reversal with a girl playing the lead so that we’d have something different in hand. We knew it was good. But this reception has been both overwhelming and encouraging for our team,” shares Vinay, who started the channel two years ago and has since grown to a team of nine with over 45 videos to their credit. Notably, the most eye-catching thing about the video is that it portrays the protagonist as an unabashed girl, nothing like we’ve seen on screen before.
“If you see our channel, we have always concentrated on bold content. People in South India are quite hesitant when it comes to producing such content while you have many such popular videos made in the North. When we started off, we were clear that we will not be playing safe. People have said a lot of negative things but we are unflinching about going ahead,” explains Vinay.
Mentioning the bout of attention that their effort has brought forth, Vinay concludes, “There is pressure now. We have to come up with something very good to keep up with the expectations.”
