Golden gesture
Winning isn’t only about the medal for Maria Andrejczyk
n a heart-warming gesture, Maria Andrejczyk of Poland, who won the silver for javelin throw at the Tokyo Olympics, has auctioned off her medal to help pay for a life-saving heart surgery of an infant.
In an equally uplifting gesture, the Zabka Polska, a Polish convenience store which won the bid at $125,000, told Maria she could keep her medal.
Maria threw her javelin 64.56 metres – her best performance at the recently-concluded Games – to take the second spot after China’s Liu Shiying.
Talking about her decision to use her medal to help the eight-month-old boy, Maria wrote on social media, “He already has a head start from Kubus — a boy who didn’t make it in time but whose amazing parents decided to pass on the funds they collected.”
